Geneva - World Jewish Congress Jewish Diplomat Yana Barinova (Ukraine) delivered a statement on 24 September on the United Nations Human Rights Council floor on behalf of the WJC calling on the Council “to elevate the importance of education, culture and media literacy to prevent racist violence against all vulnerable groups.”
“The World Jewish Congress, the representative body of over 100 Jewish communities, is deeply concerned by the rise of racially-motivated hatred and intolerance in recent years. These scourges are often directed at people who have been forced to flee their countries due to conflict, poverty, political instability or environmental conditions.
“The horrific terrorist attack in October last year against the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh that led to the murder of 11 Jews was allegedly also motivated by anti-immigrant hatred. Just last month in Texas, 22 people were murdered by a man who posted online that his actions were driven by hatred for Hispanic immigrants.
“This rise in hatred towards migrants and refugees stirs painful memories for those of us with Jewish roots. I remember that when my people sought refuge, they too were unwelcome in most places. Unfortunately, many perished as a result.
“Mr. President, saying “Never Again” is not enough. Remembering is not enough.
“Racism is born out of ignorance, and that is why we must counter misrepresentations, disinformation and hate speech, especially online. The World Jewish Congress calls for this Council and all governments to elevate the importance of education, culture and media literacy to prevent racist violence against all vulnerable groups.”
